A permanent corridor for sea exports will help provide employment for metallurgical enterprises, said Yuri Ryzhenkov.

A temporary sea corridor for the export of Ukrainian products is in place, but now it needs to be made permanent. The general director of the Metinvest group, Yuriy Ryzhenkov, said this at the conference “The Future of Ukrainian Exports” in Kyiv, the company’s press service reported on Wednesday, October 4.

According to him, after the first ships with grain and metal left the ports, there was cautious optimism about the possibility of a full resumption of exports.

“The Armed Forces of Ukraine, Navy, the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Ministry of Infrastructure have been working on these issues for at least eight months. But we all still need to work to ensure that this route becomes one of us and farmers are reliable,” said Ryzhenkov.

He recalled that the continuation of export by sea is especially important for the mining segment, because the inability to export iron ore raw materials by sea has forced Metinvest to significantly reduce the load on mining and processing plants (GOK). Before the full war, less than 10% of iron ore was exported to Europe. And most exports go by sea to China through the ports of Greater Odessa.

“Now our mining and processing plants are loaded at 35-40%. The plants of our colleagues are operating even at lower rates. And here there is no other choice but to open the ports of Greater Odessa ,” explained Ryzhenkov.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers said that the opening of ports for the export of all kinds of products can quickly improve the economic situation in Ukraine, as it will provide an additional nearly $1.6 billion in monthly foreign exchange income.

Currently, there is a temporary corridor for civilian ships in the Black Sea, established by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ukrainian Navy. Currently, 10 ships carrying agricultural products and metals pass through it.
