The European Commission suspects that the Chinese government is providing illegal subsidies to its manufacturers.
The European Commission has announced the launch of an anti-dumping investigation into the import of electric vehicles made in China. This was stated in a press release published on October 4.
The EC intends to investigate the fact that “Chinese manufacturers of electric passenger cars have received government subsidies, which harm the EU industry.”
It was noted that the investigation, announced by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on September 13, speaking in the European Parliament with a speech on the development of the European Union, will take place according to the strict legal procedure in accordance with The rules of the EU and WTO, allowing all interested parties, including the Chinese government and exporters, to provide comments, evidence and arguments.
“Wherever we find evidence that EU car manufacturers’ efforts are hampered by market distortions and unfair competition, we will act decisively… The investigation against this subsidy will be thorough, fair and based on reality,” von der Leyen said.
The EC added that it had launched an investigation on its own initiative, gathering sufficient evidence that the recent surge in low-cost and subsidized BEV imports from China to the EU posed an economic threat to the electric vehicle industry of the EU.
Based on the results obtained, it will be decided whether it is in the EU’s interest to correct the consequences of unfair trade practices by imposing anti-subsidy duties on imports of electric vehicles from China.
It was previously reported that the European Commission’s investigation into unfair competition from Chinese electric car manufacturers could lead to a significant increase in customs duties.
