The antitrust lawsuit against Google is the largest in the United States in a quarter of a decade.
On September 12, a federal court in Washington began considering the US Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google Corporation. The agency argued in court that Google used dishonest tactics to secure its status as the world’s dominant search engine. This was reported by Daily Sabah.
It is noted that the antitrust case against Google is the largest in the United States in a quarter of a decade. The trial will last for ten weeks. Dozens of US states, led by Colorado, have joined in testifying against the company. More than 100 witnesses will participate in the court hearings.
Google’s case centers on the government’s claim that the tech giant unfairly established dominance in online search by entering into exclusive contracts with device makers, mobile carriers and others, particularly Apple, which left rivals with no chance to compete.
By paying these companies billions of dollars annually, Google has ensured that it is the default search engine on phones and web browsers.
As you know, Google remains the most popular search engine, including 90% of the market in the US and around the world. Most users use Google through iPhone smartphones and Android phones.
Let’s recall that South Korea previously fined Google Alphabet $32 million for using its influence in the mobile application market to oust a local competitor. In addition, Russia fined Google 4 billion rubles for abusing its dominant market position.
