Raising the electricity tariff for the population will help support the energy system damaged by shelling and preparing for the next heating season, the head of the Ministry of Energy said.

The increase in the electricity tariff for the population from June 1 is forced and related to the preparation of the Ukrainian energy system for the next winter. Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced this on the air of the telethon on Tuesday, May 30.

According to him, last winter, the Ukrainian energy system was subjected to unprecedented shelling from Russia. The country has lost a large number of generating capacities, with the help of which the corresponding feed-in tariff is maintained. First of all, we are talking about the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.

Galushchenko noted that the repairs require significant funds.

“If we don’t do it now, we will have electricity problems next winter. Regardless of the size of the destruction, the size of the shelling. That means we will not be able to prepare for next winter,” he explained.

The Department of Energy, along with the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission, found the lowest possible increase to support the grid and prepare for winter.

“To sum up, it’s a matter of safety of the energy system,” said Galushchenko.

Recall that in April the Cabinet of Ministers postponed the increase in electricity prices for the population every month – until the end of May.

On May 30, the government decided to increase the electricity tariff for the population to UAH 2.64 per kWh from June 1.

Now the population pays UAH 1.44 per kWh if less than 250 kWh is consumed per month and UAH 1.68 per kWh if more than 250 kWh per month is consumed.
