The largest Indian carrier of Russian oil from June will lose certificates for 21 tankers.
One of the largest international shipping classification societies, Lloyd’s Register, informed the Indian company Gatik Ship Management, which became the main carrier of Russian oil after the war in Ukraine, that 21 of its ships retracted on June 3. Reuters reported it on May 26.

It was learned that Gatik was also forced to find new service companies for its 36 ships after the International Register of Shipping of St. Kitts and Nevis are their flags.
“Lloyd’s Register is committed to facilitating compliance with the Russian oil trade sanctions rules. If supported by evidence, we will remove classes and services from any vessels deemed by the relevant authorities which violates international sanctions,” the company said.
In addition, insurers American Club and Ingosstrakh also said they would no longer provide coverage for the Gatik ships.
“Neither the insurance companies, nor the Lloyd’s Register, nor the registers have explained why they stopped cooperating with the carrier,” Reuters stressed.
At the same time, at least 28 Gatik ships are listed as certified by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), which is recognized worldwide.
The agency added that Gatik has become the leading carrier of Russian oil in India this year, with a tanker fleet of more than 40 vessels. However, it is not possible to know if any of them are working today without the necessary documents.
The article also noted that a lack of transparency and limited oversight in the shipping sector allowed many ships carrying cargo from sanctioned countries to find new flags, registries and insurers.
