Russian media also reported that in the first quarter of 2023, gas production in Russia decreased by 10% compared to the same period last year, to 180 billion cubic meters. In March, production also fell by 10% compared to March 2022, to 61 billion cubic meters.
At the same time, Gazprom’s production continues to decline amid falling exports to the EU. In the first quarter, the monopolist reduced gas production by almost 18%. But the production of the largest independent producers – Rosneft and NOVATEK – is increasing.
Most of the decline in production falls on Gazprom. Since the beginning of the year, the company has stopped disclosing gas production statistics.

Rosneft increased gas production by more than 70% in the first quarter, to 19.7 billion cubic meters. In March, the company’s gas production increased by 65% to 6.7 billion cubic meters.
Earlier, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated a drop in Russia’s revenues from oil and gas sales by nearly 40%. They predict that this process will become sharper in the coming months and more serious in the medium term.
