PALM CITY, Florida (AP) – School officials say half a dozen students in Florida are taking pictures outside high school holding large letters announcing racial abuse.
The school will follow a code of conduct for students when responding to student actions, Martin County School District Superintendent John Miley said in a statement Thursday. He explained that state and federal laws prevent the district from identifying students or posting any other specific information about a possible penalty. The statement stated that school staff did not attend.
“We are acutely aware of the pain and suffering this image has caused in our community, especially our population and black American students,” Miley said. “This incident is completely contrary to our values and aspirations that we have instilled in our students.”
The photo shows six students lined up outside Palm City’s Hidden Oaks High School, a community about 35 miles (56 miles) north of West Palm Beach. Each student holds a large hand-painted letter in their hands, and students arrange the letters in a way that expresses racial abuse.
Officials said the photo was posted on social media last week.
The district is consulting with all students who need it, officials said.
