China is building a $500 million underwater Internet network that will connect Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
China plans to lay a $500 million undersea internet cable that will connect Asia, the Middle East and Europe to rival a similar US-backed project. Reuters reported this, citing four sources involved in the deal.
Three major Chinese telecom operators were found to be involved in the construction of the cable: China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom), China Mobile Limited and China United Network Communications Group Co Ltd (China Unicom).
The EMA cable will connect Asia, the Middle East and Europe and will stretch from the Chinese province of Hainan to Singapore, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and reach France.
The cable will be manufactured and installed by Chinese company HMN Technologies Co Ltd, whose predecessor is the majority shareholder of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies.
HMN Tech will receive government subsidies to build the cable, sources said.
The EMA project will compete directly with another cable currently under construction by the American company SubCom LLC called SeaMeWe-6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe-6), which will also connect Singapore to France via Pakistan , Saudi Arabia, Egypt and half a dozen other countries on the route.
The US has previously expressed concern that China is collecting internet data. Over the past four years, the US has clamped down on several Chinese submarine cable projects overseas.
Note that Google intends to lay a new fiber-optic cable that will connect the US to the UK and Spain.
