The Council of the European Union has decided to reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 100% from 2035.
The Council of the European Union adopted on Tuesday, March 28, a regulation on stricter CO2 emission standards for new cars and light trucks, with the aim of achieving a 100% reduction in such emissions from 2035 .This is stated in the message on the CE website.
The new EU regulation provides:
-
55% reduction in CO2 emissions for new passenger cars and 50% for new light trucks from 2030 to 2034 compared to 2021 levels;
-
100% reduction in CO2 emissions for both vehicles from 2035.
The new rules aim to reduce emissions from road transport, which make up the largest share of emissions in the transport sector, and provide a targeted push for the automotive industry to “move to zero- emission mobility while driving continuous innovation in the industry.”
Today’s decision by the Council of the European Union is the final step in the procedure for adopting the regulation. It will now be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will enter into force on the 20th day after its publication.
Recall that in February, the European Parliament approved the goal of zero CO2 emissions for new cars and light trucks by 2035 as part of the Fit for 55 plan.
Seven EU countries have formed an informal alliance to fight the planned phase-out of internal combustion engines from 2035.
