Fewer billionaires in China due to repression

445 people disappeared from the list of holders of record fortunes, 229 of them were from China.

More than 400 people lost their billionaire status last year, half of them from China. Reuters reported this on March 23, citing Hurun Report’s rating data.

It has been noted that the decrease in the wealth of the world’s richest people is due to the global tightening of monetary policy, the COVID-19 pandemic and Beijing’s crackdown on large technology companies.

According to the Hurun Global Rich List 2023, 445 people have disappeared from the list of record wealth holders, and 229 of them are from China. During the same period, there were 69 new Chinese billionaires.

“The number of billionaires in the world decreased by 8%, while their total wealth decreased by 10%,” said Hurun Report founder and chairman Rupert Hugewerf.

He added that the list included 3112 people against 3381 last year.

Most billionaires in China (969 people) and the United States (691 people). Together, the two countries account for 53% of the world’s richest people. India ranks third with 187 billionaires.

The first three positions in the Hurun Global Rich List 2023 are occupied by LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Hermes heir Bertrand Puch and his family.

The founder of Chinese giant Alibaba Group Holding, Jack Ma, fell to 52nd place from 34th last year, due to Beijing’s regulatory measures.

It can be recalled that the businessman’s statements about the suppression of innovation in China angered the country’s leader, Xi Jinping.

Chinese regulators blocked the $34 billion listing of Alibaba’s online payments subsidiary, Ant Group, on the stock market. Beijing has also ordered Alibaba to sell some of its media assets, including Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post.

A few months later, Alibaba was fined a record $2.8 billion for anticompetitive practices.
