Which sectors of the economy have the most women?

Of the more than 3 million small and medium-sized companies that exist in Peru, 70% led by a womansaid Rodolfo Ojeda, President of the Small Business Association Lima Chamber of Commerce.

“Out of 3,100,000 small companies that exist in our country, 70% are run by women, this is equivalent to 2 million 170 thousand small and medium-sized enterprises, and each enterprise creates an average of 3 to 4 jobs,” the representative said.

What industries are run by women?

According to Ojeda, thanks to interpersonal skills women, positioning has been achieved in areas such as beauty, services and trade. Of the 14 sectors analyzed by the Chamber of Commerce, the genre was noted to be present in more than 50% of five categories, namely: beauty salons, services, retail and wholesale, and accommodation.

The rest of the industries are led by men, especially in transportation and storage, construction, mining, and vehicle sales and repair.

“It should also be emphasized that out of every ten women managing small and medium-sized businesses, 6 have higher education and develop professional activities in beauty salons, trade and services,” explained Ojeda.

But just because they stand out in some markets doesn’t mean the economy has improved for that group of people.

According to him National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), an average of 7,760,000 women work in the country; however, out of this total, only about 4 out of 10 women have a formal job, that is, they have labor protection.

There are now more unemployed women than there were before the pandemic, and the average wage is 1,250 soles, lower than reported before the crisis.
