Shipping costs $180 per metric ton in 2021, which directly impacts local production and imports, and while it has fallen in 2022, some warn that new growth could occur.
By December 2022, the price had already dropped to $119 per tonne, providing some relief for marketbut changes due to pollution will lead to future changes in these rates.
Ricardo Barrios, Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding in Peru, explained how international emission legislation promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will bring about these changes.
“Pollution Measurements boats and this has a direct impact on freight. When a ship moves faster, it emits more pollutants, so one solution might be to go slower. However, this reduces the competitiveness of transport, because the 30-day delivery time becomes 40 days,” he told the Gestión newspaper.
Barrios adds that the solution, if you want to stay fast and competitive, is to “reduce the cargo carried by the ship. In this sense, freight is increasing because ships carry fewer containers.”
However, he points out that this will be regulated by the market and that if companies can not afford the costs that the shipping companies set, the growth will not be as sharp.
On the other hand, this indicates that in recent years there has been a reduction in the use of air transport for the import and export of goods.
“Companies that used to be allowed to pay for air travel don’t do that anymore,” he said.
In addition, he considered that the market will soon recover to pre-pandemic levels in terms of what type of transport used.
