GDP: Peruvian economy ended 2022 with growth of just 2.68%, less than expected

Peru’s economy ended 2022 with an annual growth rate of 2.68%, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) said, lower than expected.

This figure is slightly lower than the 2.7% to 3% growth expected Ministry of Economicswhich is in line with the latest forecast from the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), which showed that the Peruvian economy would achieve growth of less than 2.9%.

The gross domestic product (GDP) reached in 2022 is also lower than reported in 2021, when the economy rebounded to 13.31% after a sharp drop recorded during the pandemic.

According to INEI, these results show slowdown in the Peruvian economy “is partly due to the acute situation that the country is experiencing in the social aspect, accompanied by a lagging behind the pandemic.”

How much did he grow in December?

Despite strikes sparked by protests in December, GDP did not have a negative result in the last month of the year, but had a low result.

The INEI report indicates that in December alone, national production registered an increase of 0.86%, down from 1.68% in November, 2.01% in October and 1.66% in September.

If we analyze the progress of each month, height December is the lowest for all of 2022.

Result by sector

Growth in the last month of the year was due to the positive dynamics of the sectors: mining and hydrocarbons, construction, trade, housing and restaurants, transport and storage services and other services.

On the other side, sectors The manufacturing industry, finance and insurance, telecommunications, agriculture and fisheries suffered the most last month.

If we take into account the annual result, then the items with a negative result were Fisheries, which fell by 13.74%; Finance and insurance, which fell 6.96%; and Telecommunications, whose production decreased by 1.30%.

If positive, the sectors that grew the most in 2022 despite the crisis were housing and restaurants, which grew by 23.17%; and Transport, which grew by 10.19%.
