“The FCC has approved Amazon’s plan to deploy and operate 3,236 communications satellites subject to certain conditions, including the adoption of collision avoidance measures in low Earth orbit,” the statement said .
The commission noted that granting this permission allows Kuiper to “begin deploying its constellation with the goal of providing high-speed Internet connectivity to users around the world.”
In addition to certain conditions, the regulator also requires Amazon to ensure that the satellites are safely retired within seven years.
The first Kuiper satellites are expected to be launched into orbit in the coming months.
Recall that in November 2021, it became known about Amazon’s plans to create its own network of satellites for Internet distribution. At the same time, the Internet speed from the Kuiper network can be up to 400 Mbps, while Starlink advertises speeds from 100 to 200 Mbps.
