In a week, Peru ends two months of protests for early elections, and this crisis is also reflected in price increase consumer products such as chicken and eggs, according to Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

AT Cusco Some poultry farms have closed because a kilogram of poultry has reached 17 sols, in Loreto it reaches 15 sols, and in Apurimac, where 3 out of 10 Peruvians live in poverty, a kilogram has risen to 20 sols.

“A week ago it was 13 soles, 17 soles, now it is 20 soles. I don’t know what kind of life we will be in, please, we must find a solution, we must not fight, until, my God,” the seller asked Apurimacwho prefers to keep his name a secret.

Eggs do not escape this rise. Due to the blockade, cargoes cannot reach the south, where a kilogram is about S/9, and a pack of 30 units, which weigh less than two kilograms, is S/17 in Tacna, 14 in Cajamarca and 20 in Loreto.

Kilogram eggs above S/ 9 in southern Peru

The checkpoints also prevent the import of soybeans from Bolivia, which are the main raw material for a balanced diet. chickens and laying hens (those that carry eggs), which has a direct impact on production, said Alex Geri, president of the Southern Poultry Association (Avisur).

“The price of an egg went up, today on the farm it costs 6.50 shillings, 6.60 shillings, all of a sudden around 6.4 shillings, so you can’t ship it south. People in the south suffer from very high prices, out of reach for the general population, in the south, as far as I understand, up to 8 or 9 soles per kilo. No, just no, there is a deficit,” he said.

Why has the price of a kilogram of chicken risen again in Lima?

In the case of Lima, price increases were also reported; although, according to Midagry, this is due to supply and demand issuesThis was stated by the Director General of the Department of Statistics, Monitoring and Policy Evaluation of Midagri Christian Garay Torres.

“Throughout January, the wholesale chicken price was almost below S/5 for quite some time. It has now recovered due to market-related factors and this has led to a recovery in chicken prices. The price of chicken is now SGD 6.50 per kilogram, then it was predictable and just reacts to supply and demand factors, especially in Lima, obviously there are problems in regions where there are blockades,” the official said.

Given this scenario, southern Peruvians should replace chicken with Andean cereals such as quinoa or wheat because other meat products such as beef, pork or trout have risen by 2-7 soles per kilogram.
