Protests in Peru continue, affecting manufacturing in various sectors such as miningwhere the country stands out as the second world copper supplier.
Now a Bloomberg report warns that around 30% of copper production is at risk, further impacting a time of global supply shortages and high prices.
A copper mine was recently reported to have been suspended after protesters attacked its facilities, while supplies were cut at another mine due to road blocks.
Due to the paralysis of the roads, the mines are deprived of the entry and exit of workers, as well as the supply of fuel and other resources.
The National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society (SNMPE) estimates that in just 23 days of protests, not counting December, about $160 million was lost.
Despite the situation, the mining company still sees growth copper production A new mine will open in Peru this year, which will also depend on how long the protests last.
In addition, representatives of the union told the agency that although the transport of semi-finished copper products to the ports has suffered some interruptions, the ports themselves are operating as usual.
It is worth noting that last year copper was exported in the amount of about $20 billion, which covers world demand by about 13%.
