Sector sightseeing plunged into recession as a result of shutdowns caused by protests, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
“Unfortunately, I have to announce that the tourism sector is in recession, this recession from which we hope to get out very soon,” Economy Minister Alex Contreras said during a recent conference.
Contreras warns that roadblocks in 10 regions of the country have affected hotel, restaurant and craft businesses.
” sightseeing This is a cross sector, but if we see indirect variables, for example, what is happening in the accommodation sector, in the restaurant sector, in crafts, then we are talking about a strong reduction,” he said.
Faced with this situation, the minister assured that measures had already been taken and many of the loans of these affected companies were being restructured.
“Last year we approved the Impulso Mi Perú program with this $2 billion credit line, of which we are providing $200 million in loans at subsidized rates for the tourism sector with the option to double that amount if we see demand strong. “, he commented.
The MEF noted that from 70% to 80% of losses occur in the regions Cusco, Madre de Dios and Puno.
In Cusco alone, the region’s Chamber of Commerce estimated that they had already reached a loss of over S$40 million in January alone.
Union indicates that in December 80% of booking cancellations tourists and now, in January, cancellations are already reaching 90% of bookings.
For its part, the Puno Chamber of Commerce notes that the region is losing S$450 million daily, of which S$250,000 is in the tourism sector.
