Nigeria, Senegal and Angola have huge potential for LNG supplies, according to the EU.
The European Union aims to intensify cooperation with African countries to reduce Russia’s gas dependence by two-thirds by the end of 2022. This was reported by Bloomberg in connection with the draft EU external energy strategy, which must be adopted before the end of May.
It indicates that countries in west Africa, such as Nigeria, Senegal and Angola, have huge potential for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe.
The EU plan provides for an increase in LNG imports of 50 billion cubic meters by 2022, as well as an increase in non-Russian pipeline gas supplies of 10 billion cubic meters. This will require building relationships with traditional suppliers on a new basis and expanding trade with new suppliers, the document says.
In particular, other important steps are expected to replace Russia’s gas:
-
implementation of an agreement with the United States on the additional supply of 15 billion cubic meters of LNG by 2022 and approximately 50 billion cubic meters annually until 2030;
-
the signing of a tripartite memorandum of understanding with Egypt and Israel to increase LNG supplies by summer 2022;
-
doubling the throughput capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor, where gas is supplied to Europe from Azerbaijan, to 20 billion cubic meters per year;
-
considering the possibility of importing gas from Canada;
-
redirection to Europe of LNG shipments destined for Asia.
Recall that in early March, the European Commission presented the REPowerEU plan, which provides for a complete rejection of all types of fuel from Russia by 2030. At the same time, EU countries will be able to reduce gas consumption from Russian Federation of 100 billion cubic meters by the end of 2022. This is two-thirds of annual gas imports from the Russian Federation.
