Madre de Dios continues to register protests almost a week after it started stops at the national level.
The region is benefiting from the remnants of tourism carried out in Cusco, where a strong economic impact is reported, but how much will Madre de Dios lose because of these strikes?
According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Puerto Maldonadothe capital of the region, not only sees an impact on tourism, but also the export of its main products is under threat.
“We are losing chestnut exports, logging, everything is paralyzed because we don’t have direct access to export centers,” warned Fred Inti Bocangel, president of the Puerto Maldonado Chamber of Commerce, RPP Noticias.
Latest report on Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Minchetur)on the regional trade of Madre de Dios, highlights that gold exports account for 69% of the total supply, Brazil nuts – 20% and timber – 10%.
In addition, the region provides 0.3% of national production and exports, being the first producer of Brazil nuts.
The Puerto Maldonado union also points out that citizenship is the one that suffers the most, being lost due to the inability to work, since “90% of the population of Madre de Dios works every day.”
