Bulgaria has access to Turkey’s GTS

Bulgarian Bulgargaz and Turkish Botash signed an agreement for 13 years. The deal will help Sofia replace gas supplies from Russia.

Bulgaria has gained access to Turkey’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and natural gas transmission network in a long-term deal that will help Sofia replace supplies previously provided by Russia. Bulgarian State Gas Company Bulgargaz and Turkish gas delivery Botash (Botas) signed on Tuesday, January 3, an agreement for 13 years.

The document was adopted in Sofia in the presence of the leadership of the two companies, as well as the Minister of Energy of the Technical Government of Bulgaria, Rosen Hristov, and the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Fatih Donmez.

Gas to Bulgaria will come from Turkey

According to Khristov, the agreement solves the problem of the lack of sufficient infrastructure in Bulgaria to unload LNG.

“Thanks to this agreement, we provide the opportunity to buy gas from producers around the world and unload it on the territory of Turkey,” he said.

After that in the network Botash the raw materials will be supplied to Bulgaria.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Bulgaria was almost entirely dependent on Russian gas. The current deal provides for the supply of up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year to Sofia from Turkey.

Russia cut gas supplies to Sofia in April 2022

In April 2022, Russia cut gas supplies to Sofia. Bulgaria followed the line of the European Commission, which called on EU countries not to pay for Russian gas in rubles, the latter requested by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Bulgaria is one of three EU countries that buy gas from Azerbaijan. As Interfax reported in August 2022, the commissioning of the IGB (Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria) pipeline should allow Bulgaria to increase gas consumption from Azerbaijan to 1 billion cubic meters per year.

Sofia’s remaining needs of more than 3 billion cubic meters per year will be covered by LNG imports from Greece.

After the start of the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, many European countries set the goal of completely abandoning the use of energy resources from Russia and replacing them with supplies from other regions.
