The US Senate passed legislation allowing not only US citizens to be tried for war crimes in Ukraine.
The US Senate passed the Justice for Victims of War Crimes Act – ed. It lays the legal basis for bringing to justice all those who have committed war crimes against the Ukrainian people. The website of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported this on Thursday, December 22.
“The United States supports Ukraine not only in confronting the aggressor on the battlefield. There is a clear signal of support for our struggle in the field of justice as well… We are now confident that those involved in crimes in war committed in Ukraine will never have a safe haven in the United States. I hope that soon we can say that they don’t have it anywhere in the world. We are working on it,” said Andriy Kostin, Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
He also noted that the law passed allows the prosecution of war criminals in the United States, regardless of the location of the crime. In addition, it extends the statute of limitations for war crimes discovered years after they were committed, and it also updates existing law to allow prosecution of citizens of other countries .
Kostin added that previously only US citizens could be held accountable for such crimes.
Recall that Kostin previously said that massive attacks on civilian infrastructure will not prevent prosecutors from achieving results in the investigation of international crimes of the Russian Federation.
Kostin also said that Ukraine already has unofficial support from 10 to 16 countries on the issue of creating a tribunal for the crime of aggression by the Russian Federation.
