Russian ships will not be able to enter Norway from May 7. However, Oslo makes an exception for fishing boats.
The Norwegian government has decided to join EU sanctions and close the land border for trucks from Russia, and ports for Russian ships. This was reported by Norwegian TV channel NRK on Friday, April 29.
Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt said the Storskog border station on the border between Norway and Russia would be closed to all goods listed on the EU sanctions list.
“We are introducing the fifth set of EU sanctions on Norway. This means that we will immediately close Storskog for freight traffic, that a ban on the transport of a number of chemicals has been introduced. We are making an exception, and this is for Svalbard, because we have the Svalbard Treaty Its signatories will be treated equally, ”the minister said.
The Svalbard Treaty gives Norway sovereignty, that is, the right to govern it, but all parties to the treaty will be allowed to operate there without hindrance. The Soviet Union signed the treaty in 1925, and Russia decided to keep it in 1992.
Russian ships will not be able to enter Norway from May 7. However, Oslo makes an exception for fishing vessels, which means that two-thirds of Russian ship visits to Norway could continue.
According to statistics, last year 978 Russian ships entered Norwegian ports. The Norwegian Coastal Administration said the situation with calls in the first quarter of 2022 was almost the same.
Earlier this week in Norway, activists blocked a tanker carrying Russian oil into the country. They chained themselves to the ship in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
