Russia’s capital Moscow woke up this Sunday under more than 30 centimeters of snow in the heaviest snowfall of the 21st century, according to meteorological services.

The thickness of the snow cover covering the city has increased by 43% over the past day from 23 to 33 centimeters.

Since Saturday, almost 30% of the total monthly precipitation has fallen in the Russian capital, which is much higher than official forecasts, and in the Moscow region the snow cover has reached 43 centimeters.

The Phobos meteorological center claims that the last time such a snowfall was in 1989 – 31 centimeters, and in 1993 – 30.

Meanwhile, the Meteonovosti news service predicts that if the forecasts come true and the snow does not stop falling on the city, it will be the heaviest snowfall since 1879. The city council recommended that Muscovites refrain from using a private car and use public transport.

According to the latest data, on Sunday morning due to heavy snowfall, 13 flights had to be canceled, another 67 were delayed at three Moscow airports.

Inclement weather has also affected the normal operation of buses and trams: the sidewalks are covered with snow, making it difficult to move along the streets of the metropolis, which is home to more than 12 million people.

Authorities estimate that more than 80,000 operators are involved in cleaning streets and sidewalks, for which they have about 10,000 snowplows.
