Prosecutors proved during the trial that the defendant “leaked” the data of Saudi Arabian users for money.
Former Twitter manager Ahmad Abuammo was sentenced on Wednesday, December 14 to 3.5 years in prison for spying for Saudi Arabia. The prosecution proved in court that he passed on Twitter user data, potentially subjecting them to harassment. This was reported by Reuters, citing information from US prosecutors.
The media said the man tried to find information about two Twitter users. For this service, he received several hundred thousand dollars and a watch worth 42 thousand US dollars.
A federal jury in San Francisco found Abuammo guilty of the charges against him in August. Initially, he faced a sentence of up to ten years in prison.
The prosecutor’s office asked for a sentence of more than seven years in prison. Abuammo’s attorneys asked federal district judge Edward Chen for a sentence that their client could serve at his home in Seattle. They argue that the man’s health problems, lack of criminal record and family problems affected him while working at Twitter from 2013-2015.
Abuammo’s lawyers said his actions “pale” in comparison to the damage done by another former Twitter employee, Ali Alzabar. The latter was accused of giving thousands of Twitter accounts to Saudi Arabia and left the US before he was convicted.
