Taiwan: 18 Chinese nuclear bombers invade air defense zone

18 Chinese nuclear-powered bombers have entered Taiwan’s air defense zone, the Taipei government said on Tuesday, a record incursion amid tensions with Beijing.

On Tuesday morning, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said that twenty-one aircraft had entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the past 24 hours, including 18 nuclear-capable H-6 bombers. Taiwan’s ADIZ is larger than its airspace. It includes part of China and even includes part of the mainland.

In the past two years, China has sharply increased the number of its incursions from Taiwan’s no-go area to the southwest, but this is the largest incursion by H-6 bombers since Taipei began publishing daily data on them in September 2020, the database said. By AFP.

Last week, China introduced new import bans on Taiwanese food, drink, liquor and seafood. Taiwan’s Prime Minister Suu Kyi has accused China of flouting international trade rules and showing off “discrimination” against the island.

The H-6 is China’s primary long-range bomber and can carry nuclear warheads. It is rare for China to send more than five H-6 bombers in a single day, but in recent weeks, the raids have increased dramatically. Last month, 21 of these bombers flew over Taiwan’s ADIZ, and the current count for December is 23.

Taiwan’s 23 million inhabitants live under the constant threat of invasion by Beijing, which considers the island part of its territory to be reconquered one day, and if necessary by force.
