Some members of the Republican National Committee were furious that the committee did not immediately condemn Donald Trump and his Mar-a-Lago dinner last month with anti-Semite Kanye West and his friend, Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes, according to emails obtained by Politico.
A handful of RNC members denounced Trump directly in emails, and one prompted fellow members and RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel to condemn his decision to host the anti-Semitic dinner.
“I’m amazed at Ronna’s lack of outrage about this,” Tennessee national committeeman Oscar Brock wrote in one of a series of private email conversations, Politico reported.
“I tweeted him yesterday asking him to condemn this. As a party we must stand up against all racism and prejudice and condemn those who condone and support it, which includes calling for neo-Nazis. [sic] at dinner,” Brock added.
In another matter, Illinois committeeman Richard Porter gushed in a Thanksgiving email about how thankful he was for the holiday.
After the dinner, committee member Bill Palatucci of New Jersey responded: “Is it just me or someone else marveling at the incredible irony with which Richard wrote these wonderful words 48 hours after Donald Trump had dinner with the anti-Semite Kanye West and Nick Fuentes. . , also anti-Semitic and racist, white nationalist?
Palatucci added, “All Republican leaders need to stand up and denounce Trump’s actions and lack of judgment here.”
Jay Shepard, a Vermont national committeeman, wrote: “As individuals and as a party, we must not tolerate people like Nick Fuentes and Kanye West. We should never give them a platform for their hatred. Paying attention to them only divides us as a nation. No Republican should be associated with them [sic] not who we are.”
The messages were sent to the email addresses of all 168 committee members, Politico reported, and provide a window into the turmoil currently rocking the RNC with McDaniel at the helm and Tump as the party’s first declared nominee.
McDaniel, who is running for re-election, responded at the Mar-a-Lago dinner but never mentioned Trump by name. He called Ye’s comments “ugly”, adding, “There is no place for Kanye, Fuentes or their views within the Republican Party.”
But critics were skeptical.
McDaniel insisted in February — after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (D-Ga.) spoke at a white nationalist conference organized by Fuentes — that “white supremacy, neo-Nazism, hate speech and bigotry are disgusting and they have no home in the Republican Party.”
