The NGO Amnesty International on Tuesday demanded that society at large “not be fooled” by Iran’s “dubious” claims about a possible dissolution of the Vice Police. And this is after three months of mobilization in the case of the death of a detained woman, who was arrested allegedly for wearing the veil incorrectly.
Iranian Attorney General Mohamad Javad Montazeri said on Saturday that this police department was disbanded by the same people who created it,” adding that the judiciary has no control over it, in a message apparently intended to calm the spirits of demonstrators after mobilization, which, according to various NGOs, killed more than 400 people.
Hours later, however, the state-run Al-Alam TV channel reproached the Western media for interpreting Montazeri’s statements as “refusal by the Islamic Republic of its stance on the hijab and religious morality as a result of the riots. “No fees from Islamic Republic of Iran stated that the Irshad Patrol – the “vice police” – was abolished, ”the TV channel reported.
In this sense Amnesty International Director for the Middle East and North Africa Heba Morayefemphasized that “the Attorney General’s statements were deliberately vague and did not mention the legal and political infrastructure that supports the mandatory veiling of women and girls.”
“To say that the ‘vice police’ has nothing to do with the judiciary distorts the reality that for decades has criminalized women and girls under abusive and discriminatory hijab laws that have been supported by the judiciary,” he explained.
“Given the outrage in Iran and around the world about this extreme form of gender discrimination and violence, the authorities in this country are simply evading responsibility in order to evade responsibility,” Morayef criticized.
Call for new protests
Iranian activists have called for protests over the next three days with mobilizations and strikes after the country’s prosecutor’s office made a confusing announcement about the alleged dissolution of the Morale Police.
“Unity is one of the factors of victory,” the Tehran Youth Collective said on social media, calling for mobilization over the next three days.
This activist group and others like it called on Iranians to start the strike that started yesterday, to demonstrate in the neighborhoods and gather in the central Azadi (Freedom) Square this Wednesday.
