Since last year, Russian hackers have intensified cyberattacks and tried to gain access to intelligence about military and foreign partnerships.
Microsoft believes Russian hackers began conducting large -scale cyber operations against Ukraine in March last year. This should have laid the groundwork for a further military invasion. This is stated in a published report by Microsoft.
The document states that entities associated with Russia began preparing for a military invasion of Ukraine in March 2021, intensifying attacks on Ukrainian organizations to gain grounding in their systems.
In particular, when Russian troops were just beginning to move towards the Ukrainian border, there were recorded attempts to gain access to intelligence about military and foreign partnerships. By mid-2021, hackers have targeted supply chains not only in Ukraine, but also in NATO member countries.
As early as 2022, Russian hackers began attacking Ukrainian organizations using malware with increasing intensity. And after the military invasion, cyber operations were deployed to support strategic and tactical objectives.
Microsoft’s security teams worked closely on the Ukrainian side to identify and eliminate threats. After the incident with the detection of Wiper software on Ukrainian networks, a secure line of communication was established with key cybersecurity officials in Kyiv.
Earlier it was reported that the Armageddon hacker group carried out a cyberattack on Ukrainian government agencies.
Russian hackers also tried to hack the NATO website. During the attacks, hackers used newly created Gmail accounts, while sending phishing emails to emails not owned by Google.
