Work to dismantle the Soviet monument was blocked by Russians living in the country. To this end, they turned to the UN.
The authorities of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius have completed the dismantling of the country’s largest memorial to Soviet soldiers, located in the Antakal cemetery. This was reported by the Lithuanian news agency LRT.
The head of the city, Remigius Shimasius, emphasized that the entire process was carried out according to Western standards, and that the work itself took several weeks.
The Lithuanian authorities planned the dismantling even before November 1 this year. However, the UN Human Rights Committee said the memorial would be taken under its temporary protection and urged city authorities to avoid demolition.
The reason for this decision of the international organization is the appeal of some Lithuanian citizens who identify themselves as ethnic Russians. They argued that it violated the rights of national minorities in the country.

As we have already written, Vilnius authorities have already started dismantling the Soviet sculptures in the Antakalnis cemetery. We also reported earlier that the dissolution was blocked by the decision of the UN Committee on Human Rights.
