EC chief praises Italy for “solving gas issue”

The country was able to reduce Russian fuel imports from 40% to 10% thanks to efforts to diversify supplies.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, praised Italy, which has managed to significantly reduce its dependence on Russian gas. The politician announced this at a ceremony at Bocconi University in Milan, ANSA reported on December 7.

The EC President emphasized that Italy has actually been able to reduce gas imports from around 40% to 10% “thanks to the impressive efforts to diversify supplies”.

He added that at the beginning of November, European gas storage facilities were 96% full, meaning “safe this winter.”

Von der Leyen also recalled that as part of the REPower EU plan to accelerate the rejection of energy supplies from the Russian Federation, Italy will receive 9 billion euros for clean energy.

Recall that at the end of November, the price of gas in Europe rose above $1,400 per thousand cubic meters.
