Valentin Sukalo has been in office since 1997 after an anti-constitutional referendum in Belarus.
The chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus, Valentyn Sukalo, was taken to the intensive care unit due to a serious illness. This was reported by the Belarusian edition Nasha Niva on Friday, December 2.
The media determined that he had not shown up for work for some time.
According to journalists, the reason for this is the deterioration of Sukalo’s health. Now doctors in one of the hospitals in Minsk are fighting for his life.
The publication said that during the presidency of Sukalo, the citizens of Belarus almost “lost the opportunity to get a fair trial,” and the trial “became a ritual that only prints the decisions made early on in power structures.”
Valentin Sukalo is a veteran of a court case in the USSR and Belarus. After Alexander Lukashenko came to power, he became the Minister of Justice.
In 1997, after an anti-constitutional referendum, he was appointed president of the Supreme Court. He remains in this position to this day.
Notably, Russian oppositionist and human rights activist Mark Feigin believes that Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, whose death was reported on Saturday, November 26, may have been killed by Russian special services.
