Support for Ukraine is a contentious topic in the ruling coalition, which includes Meloni’s Brothers Italia, Matteo Salvini’s Liga and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.
The Italian Council of Ministers unanimously adopted a decree extending the supply of arms to Ukraine until December 31, 2023. On Thursday, December 1, the publication La Stampa reported.
According to the order, military hardware and equipment will be provided to Kyiv to resist Russian aggression throughout 2023 without the need for separate authorization from Italian lawmakers.
The government order must also be approved by the Italian parliament to take effect.
Such measures were introduced by the administration of former Prime Minister Mario Draghi after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, they expire on December 31st.
The current head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, at the meeting of the Council of Ministers, as a first point, issued the so-called “NATO decree” with “urgent provisions on the extension of permits for the sale of vehicles , military materials and equipment in favor of the Ukrainian state authorities.”
The decision was taken unanimously.
Earlier, Italy’s right-wing ruling parties withdrew an amendment that would have allowed the government to continue supplying Ukraine with arms through 2023.
We added that Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni supported Ukraine and NATO partners in the fight against Russian aggression. He emphasized that it is up to the Ukrainians to decide how to resolve the war.
