The policy of appeasement will never be successful when dealing with a dictator who promotes a policy of territorial expansion, said Germany’s Justice Minister.
The support of the German authorities for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project has become a “contribution” to Russia unleashing a full-scale war against Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Justice of Germany, Marco Buschmann, according to the agency’s website on Tuesday, November 29.
“We are firmly on the side of Ukraine. But we also need to be clear: from today’s point of view, the commitment to Nord Stream 2 after the annexation of Crimea is Germany’s contribution to the start of the war,” said the Minister of Justice .
Bushmann said that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed every day in Ukraine since February 24.
“Civilians are being attacked, killed and tortured. Basic infrastructure is being deliberately destroyed, and Russia seems to be trying to use the cold as another weapon to kill Ukraine. Unthinkable crimes are being committed,” he said.
According to Buschmann, Germans should remember from the history of the twentieth century that the policy of appeasement will never be successful when dealing with a dictator pursuing a policy of territorial expansion.
“Dictators see appeasement as an invitation to continue their acts of aggression and lawlessness,” the minister said.
Earlier, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of undermining the European security order. According to him, February 24 was an epochal shift and the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine destroyed the dream of a “common European home.”
