In Belarus, 64-year-old Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, who held this position since 2012, died suddenly.

Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei died suddenly in Belarus. They said that he was not sick, only a week ago he flew to Yerevan for a meeting of CSTO countries and suddenly died. The Belarusian authorities, of course, did not explain or comment on anything. Because of this, speculation began, describing Makei’s death.

Contact with the West

Makei has been working for Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko for 10 years. At the same time, according to many experts, he is responsible for relations with the West in the Belarusian dictatorship.

“Makei is undoubtedly a kind of bridge between Lukashenka and the West. And I will allow myself to assume that Lukashenka is constantly looking for opportunities to strengthen this bridge, to convince the West to love he the way he is. And this gave Belarus some chances for some less bloody future,” believes retired Belarusian military Valery Sakhashchik, a member of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya’s joint transitional cabinet for defense and national security.

At the beginning of the independence of Belarus, Makei was among those chosen by the then leadership of the Republic of Belarus to study abroad. In addition, Makei is a former KGB officer.

“Makei contacted several people from the West. In recent months, Makei has been conducting a dialogue in Vienna with representatives of several European states, representatives of the United States,” said Roman Bessmertny, former Ukrainian ambassador to Belarus.

Effect

According to Bessmertny, Makei’s death will not trigger Belarus’ entry into Russia’s war against Ukraine. And this is not a sign. “Because the role and place of the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry had absolutely no effect on the course of these events. And it was not even secondary, but even lower,” the ex-ambassador notes.

At the same time, Immortal doesn’t rule out that Makei might have been poisoned.

“You have to understand that in the state of Belarus with the existing totalitarian regime, and even the Moscow metropolis in the status of a dominion, anything can happen. Moreover, the Kremlin Fuhrer is carrying out such methods to remove those man,” said the expert.

Is Lukashenka afraid?

Russian opposition leader Leonid Nevzlin claims that the poisoning of the Foreign Minister caused Alexander Lukashenko to panic. He said he immediately ordered the replacement of his cooks, attendants and security personnel, fearing that there might be an attempt on his life or members of his family.

“The dictator does not trust anyone. Not without reason, he believes that after Makei, they can arrange a wonderful funeral for him,” said the Russian politician.

The oppositionist believes that the Kremlin does not want such a long delay in the official entry of Belarus into the war, and thus the leadership of Belarus has indicated that the time has come to act.
