It is known that Germany’s Ministry of the Interior has announced plans to automatically grant citizenship to children born here if one of their parents has legally resided in Germany for at least five years, to reduce the minimum period for obtaining citizenship by naturalization from eight to five years, to remove the current requirement to renounce the citizenship of another country. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the change, Politico reports. He noted that naturalization needs better policies.
“It is about respect and, of course, about our prosperity. Because all these women and men contribute to a strong economy. It would be good if they also choose German citizenship,” said the German Chancellor.
According to him, it is difficult not to notice the important role that immigrants played in the reconstruction and strengthening of Germany.
“Germany has become a country of hope for many. The women and men, and sometimes the children who came to Germany, have made a huge contribution to the fact that our economy has become as strong as it is today ,” emphasized Scholz.
Simplifying the rules for obtaining citizenship is one of the reforms the coalition has promised to implement when it comes to power in December 2021.
