Newsweek reported, citing a former FSB official, that Russia would attack Japan.
Russia planned to fight not only in Ukraine, but also in Japan. This was said by Newsweek, citing a statement about an anonymous former FSB officer.
The media received a letter from someone who hid under the pseudonym Wind of Change, addressed to Russian human rights activist and journalist Vladimir Osechkin. It says that the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, before the invasion of Ukraine, considered the option of a local military conflict with Japan.
“Confidence that the countries (Russia and Japan – Ed.) will enter the stage of intense confrontation and even war is high. Why, finally, Ukraine was chosen for war – the reasons are unknown,” said the letter.
It also says that as of August 2021, the Kremlin has “quite serious plans regarding a local military conflict with Japan.” However, in the end, the leadership of the Russian Federation chose to launch an invasion of Ukraine within a few months. In particular, it planned to launch the Kremlin propaganda machine in parallel, which would label the Japanese as “fascists” and “Nazis.”
This email was reviewed by Bellingcat spokesperson Kristo Grozev. According to him, he showed the letter to two FSB officers (current and former). Those who answered said they had no doubt: the letter was written by their colleague.
Japan and the Russian Federation have an unresolved dispute over Japan’s Northern Territories occupied by the USSR after World War II: the islands of Kunashir, Iturup, Shikotan and Habomai.
“For Japan, here lies the foundation of its modern geopolitics: its status as a defeated country in World War II still prevents the Japanese from having an official military force, a foreign intelligence service and a few other things. For Japan, the The return of the Kuril Islands really means changing or even canceling their post-war status,” the former FSB official explained in a letter.
The publication states that China negatively sees any attempts to change the agreements after the war, and the potential success of Tokyo in the Kuril Islands dispute is unacceptable to Beijing. China may complicate the life of the Russian Federation after this.
The media added that former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tried to negotiate with Russia on the Kuril Islands issue, as well as reforming the country’s intelligence service.
In August 2021, the FSB declassified information about how Japanese special services tortured Soviet citizens during World War II. The FSB accuser said the service was faced with the task of launching an “information campaign against Japan in Russian society.”
In addition, on August 16, a number of Russian media “exploded”, discussing the declassified documents in a completely different tone: the Japanese allegedly carried out horrific biological experimented on Soviet prisoners and treated them badly.
“They seem to have traded Japan for Ukraine,” the letter said.
The former FSB officer also added that war was inevitable for Russia due to the Kremlin regime’s manic desire to fight.
As previously reported, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, along with Chinese President Xi Jinping, warned Russia against using nuclear weapons.
