The country has already taken in a large number of Ukrainians since the start of Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine.
During a possible winter migration wave from Ukraine, which the Czech government is now preparing for, the Czech Republic will only receive tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees. This was announced on Friday, November 25, by Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, according to Czech Radio.
He emphasized that the country cannot receive a larger number of refugees, because there is nowhere to accommodate them, and the social sphere, the health care system, is under heavy pressure.
He added that the number of Ukrainians in the Czech Republic is from 3.4 to 3.7% of the population, that is, from 355 to 390 thousand people, and the number of temporary protection visas issued is 460 thousand.
“Thus, the Czech Republic received the largest number of refugees per capita in the European Union,” he said.
Rakusan said that the Czech government is preparing a scenario for some kind of accommodation crisis and is counting on the help of the entire European Union and member states, which is not as heavy as the Czech Republic.
According to the minister, currently the current influx of refugees is small, and no region is under too much pressure.
“At the moment, we are not facing a big wave of refugees. A certain number of people are arriving, but it should be noted that many have already left the territory of the Czech Republic. They returned to Ukraine and are waiting to see what happens. in the winter,” Rakushan said.
Earlier it became known that refugees from Ukraine in Poland have to pay for living in centers provided by the state. The Polish government hopes that the Ukrainians will be able to pay for the accommodation, as most already have a job.
