Trump could become the GOP nominee if there is a crowded primary field, Mulvaney told CNN’s Kasie Hunt. But the former president will ultimately lose the general election “because he is holding a referendum on himself”.
“It’s not Donald Trump versus Joe Biden or somebody else. It’s not Republican versus Democrat,” said Mulvaney, who, as Trump’s acting chief of staff, acknowledged the then-president’s tryst with Ukraine.
“It’s Donald Trump versus Donald Trump, and one of the people who can beat Donald Trump is Donald Trump. That’s exactly what happened in 2020,” he continued.
“A group of people could beat” Trump in a head-to-head primary race, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Sen. Tim Scott (R), Mulvaney said.
When asked if potential GOP presidential candidates should “check their egos” to narrow the field to prevent Trump from winning the nomination, Mulvaney advised them not to define themselves in Trump’s terms.
However, he refused to support any hopeful rumours, saying he was friends with them.
