Activists imprisoned themselves in an anchor chain in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In Norway, activists from Greenpeace blocked a tanker carrying Russian oil into the country. Activists chained themselves to a ship in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On Monday, April 25, Reuters reports.
It was noticed that the Ust-Luga tanker is currently anchored near the Exxon Mobil oil terminal in Slagen, about 70 km south of the Norwegian capital Oslo.
The activists, who arrived in a small boat, chained themselves to the tanker’s anchor chain in an attempt to prevent 95,000 tonnes of oil from being unloaded.
“Oil is at the heart of not only the climate crisis, but also wars and conflicts. I am surprised that Norway is acting as a free port for Russia’s oil, which, as we know, is funding in Putin’s war, ”said Frode Plaim, head of Greenpeace Norway.
The group called on the Norwegian government to ban the import of Russian fossil fuels and said the Norwegian arm of Exxon Mobil Esso should terminate any contracts for such imports from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine .
Esso Norway had agreed to buy oil before the war and had no plans to buy more from Russia, a company spokesman told Norwegian daily Dagbladet.
Earlier, Greenpeace activists blocked two oil tankers off the coast of Denmark to deliver 100,000 tonnes of Russian oil.
It was previously reported that Norway had imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia in response to Russia’s illegal attacks on Ukraine.
