Russian planes flew over Alliance ships at a height of 91 meters and at a distance of 73 meters, and their pilots did not respond to messages from the NATO military.
Two Russian fighter jets made “unsafe and unprofessional overflights” of NATO ships during routine operations in the Baltic Sea. This was announced on Friday, November 18, in the report of the Alliance, Voice of America.
NATO Naval Command said planes flew over the ships at an altitude of 91 meters and a distance of 73 meters on Thursday morning after Russian pilots failed to respond to messages from the NATO military.
“NATO considered the engagement unsafe and unprofessional because it was conducted in a dangerous area used for air defense exercises, as well as due to the height and proximity of the aircraft. The engagement increased risk of miscalculations, mistakes and accidents,” the statement said.
The Alliance added that NATO forces “act responsibly” in accordance with existing rules.
“NATO will respond appropriately to any interference with its legitimate activities in the area that endangers the security of our aircraft, ships or their crews. NATO does not seek confrontation and does not threaten,” the statement said.
It is known that the incident happened against the backdrop of increasing tensions between the Western military alliance and Russia due to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
