House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) reflected on two decades of Democratic leadership Thursday when she announced her intention to step down as the top executive, giving shoutouts to the three presidents she worked with to pass a key legislation.
“I’ve enjoyed working with three presidents, making historic investments in clean energy with President George Bush,” he said to applause. A noise could be heard from both sides of the corridor.
“Transformative health care reform under President Barack Obama,” he continued. “And building the future from infrastructure to healthcare to climate action with President Joe Biden.”
Democrats rose from their seats to applaud the mention of Obama and Biden.
Of course, Pelosi also served as Speaker of the House under President Donald Trump, but she didn’t mention that during her speech.
Trump has relentlessly attacked Pelosi in public, often with one of her childhood nicknames: “Crazy Nancy.”
Just two weeks ago, he told a crowd of supporters at a rally in Iowa, “We are going to end Nancy Pelosi’s political career once and for all.” Days earlier, a man had broken into Pelosi’s home in San Francisco and attacked her husband with a hammer, sending him to the hospital for head surgery. The suspect, David DePape, allegedly yelled, “Where’s Nancy at?”
Paul Pelosi is expected to make a full recovery, although the process will be long.
Nancy Pelosi thanked her family members individually after her big announcement: “I will not seek re-election to the Democratic leadership in the next Congress.”
“Thank you to my dear husband Paul, who has been my beloved life partner and pillar of support. We are all grateful for all the prayers and well wishes as her recovery continues,” she said.
Pelosi will finish the two-year term she just won midterm as she makes way for a new figure to lead the Democratic caucus. The elections for the leadership of the democratic parliament will take place on November 30.
