Two-term Rep. Katie Porter, a progressive California Democrat known for challenging corporations in Congress, is expected to win re-election after a stiff challenge from Republican Scott Baugh.
Porter rose to national prominence on the House Financial Services Committee, where he served viral collections of top Wall Street executives with his whiteboard and marker as a visual aid. Protégé Elizabeth Warren later continued her success on the Natural Resources Committee, taking the lead oil and gas executivesit garnered millions of views on social media and fueled speculation about bigger aspirations, including a possible run for the Senate.
Porter’s 2018 victory in California’s 45th Congressional District helped Democrats turn Orange County blue, making history in what was once a bastion of conservatism that helped catapult Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan to White House. He chose to run for the state’s 47th congressional district after its lines were redrawn in 2020.
Republicans won back three of Orange County’s five seats in the 2020 election. They spent large sums of money this year trying to win them all back in an attempt to regain their majority in the House.
Baugh, an attorney who previously served as state assemblyman and chairman of the Orange County GOP, hoped voter discontent with the state of the economy would carry him to victory. Like other GOP candidates this year, Baugh has blamed Democrats for high inflation.
“Many of the independents lean toward the Republican view of life, the American way of life. They don’t want socialism in this country, and I think the coast of Orange County rejects socialism in this country,” Baugh. SAPS in the last days of the competition.
Even Republicans attacked Porter for this subsidized housing with the University of California, Irvine, campus, where he served as a law professor before going to Congress. “Corporate profits today are about half of inflation, what we pay at the grocery store, that extra $2, $1 of that $2 is corporate profits,” Porter said.
