The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry spoke with Lavrov – the tenth time since the beginning of the year. Later, the Chinese diplomat signed a communiqué following the summit, condemning the aggression of the Russian Federation.
At the G20 summit, held in Bali, only one diplomat met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. This was reported on Wednesday, November 17, Bloomberg reports.
“Foreign Minister Wang Yi was the only G-20 diplomat to officially meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, who succeeded Putin. This was their tenth conversation this year,” the report said.
China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing will “continue to take an objective and fair position and play a constructive role” in facilitating “peace talks.”
Bloomberg said China signed a communiqué following the G20 summit, stating that the majority of G20 members “strongly condemned the war in Ukraine.” French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20, called China’s “sincere” commitment to the UN charter.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the Ukrainian peace formula at the G20 summit, which includes 10 points. In response, Lavrov called the Ukrainian President’s rhetoric “Russophobic and aggressive,” and also accused Kyiv of not wanting to negotiate. Soon he left the summit. Russian media reported that Lavrov spoke at two meetings and held several bilateral meetings.
