Lisbon, Portugal (AP) – Prosecutors in southern Portugal have formally charged a suspect in the disappearance of a British woman, Madeleine McCann, who went missing nearly 15 years ago while on a family holiday in a southern European country.
A statement from the Ministry of Public Works on Thursday said the suspects could not be identified, but they said they were acting at the request of German authorities and in contact with British investigators.
In mid -2020, German police identified a German citizen, Christian Bruckner, as a suspect in the case.
McCann was 3 years old when he disappeared into an apartment where his family was resting at the seaside resort of Praia e Luz in the Algarve.
Bruckner, 45, is serving a prison sentence in Germany for drug offenses and faces up to seven years in prison in 2005 for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal. Rape also took place in Praia and Luz.
Bruckner has denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
Investigators are conducting their investigations with the help of judicial police in the nearby city of Portimao, according to a statement by prosecutors.
