The European Commission has proposed to the Council of the EU to include Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia in the Schengen Agreement without further delay. This was reported on the EC website on Wednesday, November 16.
“For many years, these states have made a significant contribution to the normal functioning of the Schengen area … Although Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia are partially bound by the Schengen rules, the internal controls on the border with the Schengen countries still exist and they do not enjoy the full benefits of membership. Therefore, the requirement regarding these countries is their recognition as part of the Schengen area,” said the message.
As mentioned in the European Commission, on December 8, the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs will vote for the full participation of Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia in the Schengen area without internal border controls.
The European Commission believes that expanding the list of Schengen member countries will make Europe safer through improved protection of common external borders and effective law enforcement cooperation. By not wasting time crossing the border, people-to-people contact will be facilitated, and Europe will become more attractive as the largest place in the world without internal border controls.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria fully meet the requirements to become full members of the Schengen area.
And on the eve of the European Parliament approved Croatia’s entry into the Schengen area.
The Schengen free movement area now includes 26 countries (all EU member states except Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania, as well as non-EU countries (Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein). It covers 420 million people and an area of more than 4.3 mon sq. km.
