Ukraine can make peace with the Russian Federation only based on UN values and international law, António Guterres explained.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine violated the territorial integrity of the Ukrainian state. This is contrary to the UN Charter, so peace can only be restored based on the values of the United Nations. This is what UN Secretary General António Guterres said at a press conference in the capital of Cambodia, where the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is taking place, the UN website reports.
According to him, currently it is very important to create conditions for the gradual continuation of the dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, which will lead to a future where peace will reign.
“But not just any world, but a world based on the values of the UN Charter and the norms of international law,” Guterres stressed.
He added that the war in Ukraine, the global energy and food crisis and the climate emergency are also on the agenda of the ASEAN summit.
“In these turbulent times, regional organizations, including ASEAN, are essential to create global solutions,” said the UN Secretary General.
Guterres concluded that the Organization is working to alleviate the global food crisis. In particular, it expands the initiative to return Ukrainian grain to markets and remove barriers to Russian food and fertilizer exports.
Recall that the Russian Federation, in talks with UN officials in Geneva, said it wants to gain unhindered access to world markets for its food and fertilizer exports.
