The Foreign Ministry speaks about the need for more flexibility in finding mechanisms for rapprochement between Ukraine and the European Union.
Ukraine should not be offered EU membership, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said in a speech at a European media summit, EP wrote.
He disputes this position by the fact that countries in the Western Balkans have gone a long way in candidacy for EU membership.
The local edition of Heute also quoted Schallenberg’s words that Ukraine, in principle, should not be a member of the EU, even in the future. He pushed a different path for Ukraine than full membership.
According to the minister, there should also be other models than Ukraine’s accession to the EU, accession to the EU Single Economic Zone or simply maintaining the current level of the Association Agreement. Schallenberg called for more flexibility in finding mechanisms for rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU.
Recall, the Austrian chancellor became the first European leader Putin met after the start of the invasion of Ukraine. His visit is considered very controversial.
On April 18, Ukraine submitted the first part of the questionnaire for obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership. Right now, the European Commission is waiting for the second part of the document from Kyiv. The EC relies on two main criteria for Ukraine’s accession to the EU: democracy and market economy.
