French actor Gerard Depardieu closed the production center “PTS ZhD” in Russia. The decision is linked to a halt in projects, TASS reports, citing Depardieu’s friend and producer Arnaud Frilli.
“This structure was created for the development of audiovisual projects. Without active work, this system is useless, because it requires costs even during downtime. A new structure can be opened when there is more specificity in projects,” the producer said in a statement. At the same time, Frille pointed out that the decision was “in no way connected” to the situation that arose due to Russia’s war against Ukraine. “As for Gerard, he is still very motivated to participate in projects in Russia,” he added.
Depardieu’s Russian citizenship and ban on entering Ukraine
In January 2013, Depardieu received a Russian passport in Sochi during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Depardieu applied for Russian citizenship due to disagreement with the French government’s plans to introduce a 75% luxury tax in the country. The actor’s decision caused a widespread public outcry in France. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Depardieu said he was ready to “die for Russia.”
In 2015, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) banned Depardieu from entering the country for speaking “in support of violations of the territorial integrity and sovereignty” of Ukraine.
