Russia wants access to global markets for its food and fertilizer exports.
Russia, in talks with UN officials in Geneva, expressed its desire for unhindered access to world markets for its food and fertilizer exports. This was reported by Reuters.
At the same time, the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry did not say whether Moscow is ready to continue the Black Sea Initiative agreed in July, which allows Ukraine to continue exporting grain. The deal expires on November 19th.
The UN reported that 10 million tons of grain and other food products were exported from Ukraine under the agreement, helping to avert a global food crisis. Russia has repeatedly complained that its own grain and fertilizer shipments, while not directly targeted by Western sanctions, are effectively blocked because the sanctions restrict shippers’ access to finance, insurance and ports.
Moscow said in a statement that the shipments of Ukrainian grain and the “normalization” of Russia’s own agricultural exports were part of a package of measures to ensure global food security.
A UN statement on November 11 said the participants “continue to implement the Black Sea Grain Initiative and have had constructive discussions on its continuation.”
Moscow has previously said it is prepared to pull out of the deal, which expires on November 19, if progress is not made on its problems. At the same time, Russia already suspended its participation in the deal at the end of October after the attack on the fleet in Crimea, but returned a few days later.
