The United States noted the preparation of Russian naval vessels for a possible test of a new nuclear torpedo.

It is possible that in the coming weeks, Russian warships will be involved in preparations for a possible test of a new Poseidon nuclear torpedo, said a senior US official with a direct connection to the matter. The BBC writes about it.

Among the ships involved in the exercise is the cruise-missile submarine Belgorod, modified for special operations, capable of launching unmanned underwater vehicles, including the Poseidon torpedo.

Over the past week, ships have been recorded leaving the test site in the Arctic Ocean and returning to port without testing. The United States believes the Russians may have technical problems.

“This can be seen as part of a bigger picture in the context of the behavior of the Russian military, which has been sending untrained and under-equipped troops to Ukraine recently. The Russian military industry is suffering tough times, and we’re also seeing Western. sanctions on high-tech military technology having an effect.” and must continue,” said the Western diplomat.

US officials say Russia may try to test the torpedo again, but say the water at the test site is about to freeze.

The torpedo test is likely to raise tensions with the US at a time when Washington and its allies are closely monitoring any sign of Russia preparing to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war. The US is also paying particular attention to any possible test of the Poseidon torpedo.

The Poseidon torpedo is a nuclear unmanned underwater vehicle capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. The nuclear propulsion system gives Poseidon almost unlimited range.

President Vladimir Putin first announced the existence of the Poseidon system in his 2018 State of the Union address, calling it an “innovative” new weapon.

The Belgorod submarine is the largest submarine in the world today and was delivered to the Russian Navy in June. At over 608 feet, it is longer than the US Navy’s 569-foot Ohio-class ballistic and guided missile submarine.

The Belgorod submarine was launched in 2019 and was expected to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2020 after trials, but they were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Russian state news agency TASS reported. The time of the first release of the submarine to the sea is not called.

It was previously known that Russia is testing the latest nuclear submarine Generalissimo Suvorov. It will be of strategic importance, assured the Russian Ministry of Defense.
